It pains me to see the same people waving the American flag and shouting that this is the greatest country on earth quickly dropping the flag and walking away whistling when we have an opportunity to step up and prove it. Sure it's a dog eat dog world out there. Sure hard work should be rewarded with success and laziness should meet failure. But in this country, there are some things to which even this rule should not be applied. Some things are just too important. How we are judged as a nation in our capacity for compassion and how we treat each other is a huge part of not just the soil we walk on but the idea that we like to call America. You did know America is more than just a word didn't you? We are a nation based on an idea. The idea that men and women free of the rule of a dictatorship can live and work together not just for the benefit of ourselves but of our nation as a whole. In short, just like any other nation out there, we protect our own.
How quickly the united part of the United States of America seems to have been forgotten after 9/11. Certain entities are successfully convincing people that this about money. In reality, and by reality I mean the world that you and I non-multimillionaires live in, this is about what should be a basic human rights issue. Not a monetary issue. People shouldn't be without health care in
any country. Especially this one.
Whether you're rich or poor, smart or make really bad life decisions, health care should be one of those things you can count on just like you count on the police to protect you. Your local fire department will come and help you save your home whether the fire you started was an accident or not. Conservative Republicans, you need to stop fighting a battle you've already won! This isn't universal health care. The public option isn't a free ride but a more affordable option. People will still have to pay for coverage. No one is going to get free health care without paying anything. That would be nice. But thanks to you and your valiant efforts that is not the case and won't likely be the case within our life times. Reach around and give yourself a pat on the back. That prenatal care the young mother needed but couldn't get just resulted in an unwanted abortion via miscarriage. And we know how you feel about abortions.
What if we, instead of being angry at the government for picking on the insurance industry, turned and asked why the insurance industry doesn't simply get their act together? These people didn't get to where they are by being stupid. They're not going to let the public option put them out of business. Especially when the alternative is to simply provide a better service than the government can. Which, according to many, shouldn't be too hard. In fact a large chunk of the potential customers that they would lose to the public option are people with pre-existing conditions that they wouldn't have insured anyway. So what's left? Perhaps they could stop
increasing their rates by 73% in the span of only 6 years?
In the end, the way I see it, is that we have two choices. We can continue to be afraid for the multi-billion dollar health insurance industry and be angry at the government for picking on them. Or we can recognize that there is a reason these companies are so successful. Flat out not paying reimbursements for needed medical treatments by a paying customer who has always paid you on time isn't good old American capitalism at work. It's fraud, and getting away with it is criminal. That's just one of
many examples of things the health insurance industry gets away with today that
should be illegal. What we have to realize is that so long as these corporations have share holders to answer to our best interests and physical well being will never be their top priority. If it were any other product or service then perhaps it wouldn't be so vital. But when it comes to the health and safety of you and your loved ones it's just too important to put profit first.
